Interdisciplinary Approaches to Violence
http://www.abdn.ac.uk/cass/graduate/funding/research/violence
Violence comes in many forms: from the barrel of a gun, to the end of a fist, through to the discursive power of language and the power of the symbolic, imagination and culture constructing some nations, some values, some beliefs and indeed some people as unworthy of dignity or of life itself. Despite being exhaustively documented and analyzed through a range of disciplinary lenses, the costs of violence are spiralling.
This new inter-disciplinary project offers postgraduate students funded opportunities to study multiple forms of violence. We invite applications for projects which analyze representations of violence (for example through the media, art, policy documents, political speeches, legislation); economies of violence (including knowledge economies and international political economies), and on policies and legislation geared to reducing violence yet may potentially engender other violent effects (for example in the arenas of human rights and gender legislation, democratic governance, post-conflict resolution). * Pioneering research investigating multiple forms of violence * Opportunities to be methodologically innovative * Working with contemporary critical theories, and links with policy and practice * Cross-cultural and cross-community involvement * Problem-focused inter-disciplinary approaches
